Austin Area Homestead Exemption

Homestead Exemption Austin Texas

The Homestead Exemption removes a portion of your home’s value from taxation. You’ll also have a cap in place to ensure taxes do not increase more than 10% each year.

This means the amount of property taxes you’ll pay will be for a lesser amount than the assessed value of your home. This potentially can save you thousands on property taxes.

Who qualifies for a Homestead Exemption & When Should You File For One?

If you purchased a home last year most likely your last years taxes were settled at closing. If you own and occupy your home on January 1st of this year you can file for a homestead exemption. This must be filed no sooner than January 1st and no later than April 30th of this year. You only need to file once, not annually.

A general residential homestead exemption is available to taxpayers who own and reside at a property as of January 1st of the year. To apply for this exemption, taxpayers must submit a completed application along with a driver’s license or state-issued personal ID certificate that has the same address as the property they are applying for the exemption on.
